This works quite well for us, our "biggest"
Knots hosts 1,4mio zones
with a single catalog. I described our setup here:

Ha! Reading that sounds very familiar, we moved from PowerDNS to knot for basically
exactly the same reasons! Our solution was a little bit different and works well in our
environment.

The biggest improvement we found was batching zone adds/deletes in a single knotc
conf-commit. But it would still be nice to reduce this as much as possible.
