I agree. Once a Registrar has more than say 50 domains - they really ought to invest into some sort of management system. This makes it easier for them to potentially delegate control of services to their clients (for the more adventurous clients). Sneakily - this off-loads the support that Registrars need to supply. Systems like C-Panel provide a lot of this functionality (might need an EPP module for FRED - which I've found to have a different flavour of EPP). I presume if one searches around - there may be free versions of software like C-Panel. Perhaps others can comment?

Registrars should find a system that caters for multiple, different EPP dialects (for .africa, Cocca - etc). They can then properly support the hosting of domains, e-mail, web sites - etc. It always pains me when I hear comments like - I don't trust my ccTLD, I prefer to use Gmail.

Personally, I wrote my own system (https://vweb.co.za) years ago before C-Panel existed. It supports most EPP Registry systems - except for FRED. I started adding FRED but gave up as its EPP is somewhat different and I had no customers looking for FRED based domains. It also supports DNSSEC, SSL Certificates (automated with Let's Encrypt), DANE and IDN (non-ascii) Domain names (Universal acceptance).

The more Registrars that do this (automated management systems), the more Domains from multiple Registries they will sell. As an incoming tide raises all sea-worthy ships, so would all Registries and Registries sell more Domains.

Hello,

If i’m correct FRED is only one registry software what has function for get list domains via EPP extension - its a very simply for any automation.

Other registries (mainly gtld, cocca based, etc .) provide data in CSV or table under registrar GUI, or they do export to FTP accounts for registrars (Verisign, Afilias, ..) by our experiences

Hello,

As our list of registrars has grown, we are regularly getting a request from a registrar to "Please
send me a list of domains under our registrar account with their expiry dates"

As a registry using FRED registry, how do you handle such requests?

We have so far just directed them to use the command list_domains under fred-client BUT we would
like to here if others are handling this in a different or better way.

Many of our new registrars are at the point of learning how to be a good registrar and so they often
ask us for help like this.

Hello

I'd go one step back and ask about the roles and responsibilities of the registry and the registrars.
IMHO the registry is not the database for the registrars. They should be handling their books
properly. And if they fail to do so, they can always use the mentioned solution, plus info command.
Or even whois...

Unless they keep their records in real paper books/notepads, not a DB.
In my perception FRED is about automation, introducing technology and automation, but others might
see things in a different way. EPP was created for a reason...

Thank you
Piotr
